Amber Volmering

Job title and company

Senior Optical Hardware Engineer, Nest Labs, Google Inc

Bachelor of Science in Optical Sciences and Engineering

What do you do?

I work at Nest Labs developing optical sensor technology, allowing us to create the connected home. The sensors we design and manufacture are what allow our devices to interact with their environment. Through our sensor input, our devices allow our users to save energy, as well as stay protected in their homes.

What is your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part of my job is working on products that make the world a greener and safer place. The biggest residential use of energy is climate control (think AC). Our smart thermostats learn a user's schedule, allowing the home to save energy when the user is not home. Knowing I work on a product that helps reduce the world’s energy use is a huge deal to me.

What inspired you to enter into your field?

I was inspired to enter the engineering field because I knew I would be able to develop skills and work on projects that impact the world. Everyone has a gift or talent, and mine always tended towards math and science in school. I entered engineering to hone those skills so they could be used to improve the lives of people around the globe.
